Islander is a sturdy, 164-foot, twin-hulled expedition ship, designed for year-round discovery and active exploration. The lounge features full-height windows providing a beautiful panorama.  National Geographic Islander passengers tend to be Adventurous older couples and singles and Mainly American. When all cabins have double occupancy, the ship provides a space ratio of 22.2 tons per passenger and a crew to passenger ratio of one for every 2.4 passengers. At full capacity the space ratio is 21.3 tons per passenger and the crew ratio is one to 2.5 passengers.

There is average outdoor deck space and a fitness centre but no swimming pool or any other leisure activities on board. It carries a fleet of four Zodiacs and snorkeling gear including wetsuits as well as a Splash-Cam and video microscope.
